“ | It's a warning. A goddamn serious one, but that's the point - it shows we're willing to strike at the heart of their territory. | „ |

The Destruction of Deimos was an event in the UN-MCR Cold War, in which the Martian moon Deimos was destroyed by UN nuclear missiles.
History[]
TV show[]
Following the Destruction of Phoebe by the MCRN Scirocco, the UN decided that a retaliatory strike was necessary in payback for the Martian destruction of a research base owned by Earth. Following this event, several MCRN vessels began to burn sunward, which was perceived by Admiral Augusto Nguyen to be a threat to Earth. Admiral Souther would prove resistant to the idea of further violence, proposing to use the UN Navy to blockade terraforming supplies of helium and titanium headed to Mars in a trade embargo, while Nguyen suggested ordering the UNN Nathan Hale to fire upon the Scirocco in response to Phoebe Station's destruction. Ultimately, Chrisjen Avasarala and Sadavir Errinwright would suggest instead to destroy Deimos, a lightly-inhabited moon only hosting the Martian Deep Radar Station. Such an attack would serve as "a moon for a moon", with the two nations essentially trading one for another - while also keeping casualties light. Souther would protest this decision, ultimately stepping down as Fleet Commander and assuming charge of the UN Jupiter Fleet.[1]
The moon would be attacked by UN missiles, with the moon's point-defense proving ineffective at shooting them down before impact. The explosion would completely disintegrate the moon, reducing it to rubble, leaving the Deep Radar station destroyed and the 17 personnel working there dead. Following the moon's destruction, the debris field would force planet-wide flight restrictions to be placed into effect in the Martian planetary system.[2]
