Dimitri Havelock is a security contractor. He worked as a Detective for Star Helix Security on Ceres Station for about a year, partnered with Josephus Miller. He later worked for Royal Charter Energy (RCE), serving as acting Chief of Security aboard the Edward Israel. In that position, he played a critical role in the proceedings between RCE and the inhabitants of First Landing.
Appearance[]
Havelock has pale skin, light colored hair, a square jaw, and dark eyes.
History[]
Background[]
Havelock was born on Earth, but only ever worked there for a total of six months. For a further eight years, he worked security on Earth's orbital stations, including three years as a vice officer on the Lagrange stations between Earth and Luna. Being Earth-born, Havelock perceived a general lack of respect from his Belter colleagues, particularly during his tenure at Star Helix.
During the thirteen years before working for Star Helix, Havelock had worked for eight different corporations, including Pinkwater Security, El-Hashem Cooperative, and Stone & Sibbets (where he was one of only two Earthers on a long-distance hauler with a crew of twenty).
Eros Incident[]
As unrest on Ceres over the destruction of the Canterbury came to a head, Havelock grew more alienated from both his colleagues at Star Helix, and the station's majority-Belter population. Once when he got drunk at the Blue Frog and went looking for a fight, Miller calmed him down and convinced him not to get himself into trouble. Later, he was ordered not to participate in the crackdown on OPA mobs, due to his reputation for escalating such situations.
When Miller became obsessed with his investigation into the disappearance of Julie Mao, Miller asked Havelock to make excuses for him at work. Soon thereafter, Havelock left Star Helix to work for Protogen, which was at the time advertising on Ceres a need for security personnel elsewhere.
As tensions rose between the inner planets and the Belt, Havelock grew more alienated from his Belter colleagues at Star Helix Security. At one point he got drunk at the Blue Frog bar, looking for fights, but was talked out of it by his partner, Miller. When the conflict escalated and the frequency of OPA mobs on Ceres grew, Havelock was ordered not to participate in the crackdown.
Miller lost his job at Star Helix when the UN ceded Ceres to the OPA. He later contacted Havelock twice regarding his search for Julie Mao. First, Miller asked for help locating the Rocinante. Havelock informed Miller the Roci has registered a flight plan that would take it to Eros Station, and offered to get him a job at Protogen. Following the deployment of the protomolecule on Eros, Miller contacted Havelock to ask for information regarding Protogen's Thoth Station, from whence the deployment was orchestrated. Havelock replied with navigational coordinates in an encrypted message via Ganymede.
Ilus[]
During RCE's exploratory mission to Ilus IV, Havelock served as acting Chief of Security of the Edward Israel. While actual Chief of Security Adolphus Murtry was on the planet with nearly all of the ship's security personnel, Havelock was left in-charge with only two of the mission's most-junior security officers.
On instruction from Murtry, Havelock (a) disabled the reactor safety mechanisms on one of the Edward Israel's two remaining small shuttles, thereby essentially turning it into a bomb, and (b) administered nominal combat training for a group of RCE's engineers, with the ostensible intent of supplementing the ship's reduced security presence.
During an extra-vehicular training session, Naomi Nagata was discovered attempting to sabotage the weaponized shuttle. She was captured by the "militia" and detained aboard the Edward Israel.
When the technology on the planet activated and disabled all fusion reactors in the vicinity, the ships in orbit lost primary propulsion and the ability to generate electricity. This put all ships in danger of being destroyed as their orbits deteriorated and they entered the planet's atmosphere. While it was suggested to Havelock that he release Naomi (a brilliant engineer) so she could help solve the problem, Murtry rejected this idea and ordered Havelock to keep her imprisoned. Havelock did not agree with this decision, but obeyed the order.
When Alex and Basia attempted to rescue Naomi, Havelock assisted them by both (a) confusing the militia with conflicting and/or deceptive orders, and (b) actually turning on his trainees and covering Naomi's escape. Notably, he took care to avoid actually killing any RCE personnel during this engagement, instead relying on their lack of training (they had almost no experience in zero-G) and discipline (their de facto leader was not terribly effective) to suppress and incapacitate them.
Notes[]
- In Leviathan Wakes, Havelock's first name was mentioned once as being "Dmitri". However, in Cibola Burn (where he is a major viewpoint character), his name is given as "Dimitri". These are most likely two different transliterations of the original Russian name Дмитрий.
