The Conflict on Ilus IV is an event where refugee Belters on the recently discovered planet Ilus IV come into conflict with an expedition sent by the Royal Charter Energy in the midst of reactivating Ring Builders technology.
Events[]
The blockade run[]
After the devastation on Ganymede from the UN-MCR War many Belter inhabitance were forced to flee onboard ships. They became refugees and could not often get a port which would accept them. Several Belter ships then after the slow zone incident attempted to run a Earth-Mars Coalition Navy blockade of the Ring space to attempt and reach one of the new worlds. UN and MCR ships fired upon these ships knocking several out before entering the ring space and several more inside of it. A ship that successfully ran the blockade Barbapiccola however entered the Ilus system and settled on Ilus IV.[1]
An Earth company Royal Charter Energy however, had already made a claim for the planet, and sent a ship Edward Israel to the colony to take control and prevent any further contamination by the Belters.
Upon reaching Ilus/New Terra[]
The Edward Israel launched its heavy lift shuttle to a landing pad near the settlement, however it was destroyed when an explosion occurred on the pad. Several Belters had placed a bomb on the pad killing the new RCE Governor and many personnel. [2]
This immediately caused friction between the RCE personnel and Belters.
The United Nations responded by sending Captain James Holden of the Rocinante to intermediate between the factions.
Rocinante arrives[]
Upon reaching the planet the Rocinante landed by a cliff a walkable distance from First Landing. The crew exited the frigate and proceeded to the settlement where upon reaching were greated by members of the RCE and Belter colonists. At this point the sky blew in thousands of pieces of metal in the air hitting the settlement and injuring several people.
Amos and Murty travelled to the ruins of the landing pad that exploded destroying the heavy lift shuttle and killing many RCE personel to investigate it. Upon searching they discovered evidence of a bomb being the culprit.
When the Investigator appears to Holden it asks him to travel to a Ring builder structure to fix it. Upon reaching the structure the Investigator opened a doorway and showed Holden towards a root that had grown into the structure telling Holden to cut it off so that the structure can function. Holden does so then leaves the structure before getting stuck inside.
Later a Ringbuilder tower begins moving towards First Landing causing Holden to destroy it with a missile from the Rocinante, the settlement is then struck by lighting which was striking in a straight line across the entire planet.
Unknown to all the Investigator was activating all the Ring Builder machines and structures across the world despite that all had been unused for thousands if not millions of years.
After a Belter threatens Murtry the RCE commander pulls his weapon and executes this Belter. Later when the remaining Belters who had planted the bomb to murder the RCE personel were planning their next terrorist attack Murtry had their location bugged and laid an ambush killing all of them except for Lucia Mazur who fled to the Rocinante with Naomi. RCE tried to prevent her boarding the frigate but were stopped when one of the PDCs off the ship was activated.[3]
Disaster[]
On the far side of the planet a ancient reactor exploded causing a huge explosion. This happened on a chain of islands and caused a huge tsunami that would destroy every human structure of the planet. In response to this the Belters and RCE began to evacuate the planet. However, when the shuttle that was launched to land on the planet was destroyed by the moons which had activated a defensive state preventing any craft from entering atmosphere.
With no hope of escaping the planet, Holden suggests that everyone evactuates to a nearby Ring Builder structure and seal the entrance once everyone was in. Narrowly closing the entrance before the tsunami hit the humans sheltered inside until it was safe to exit again.[4]
Tensions were high inside the structure with RCE personal and Belters being hostile to one another. When a RCE man is found dead one of RCE men grabs a Belter he believed had murdered him and tried to drown the Belter in a pool. Murtry and Holden managed to stop him, however when the Belter is lifted from the pool several glowing slugs were on his face. The Belter suddenly died infront of everyone and the RCE man who tried to drown him had a slug fall on his face upon which he suddenly died also. It was discovered that the walls of the structure were covered by these highly poisonus slugs which could instantly kill a person.[5]
Void bullet[]
Several people began seeing greenness in their eyes and as it progress they began losing their sight. This spread the everyone with the sole exception of James Holden. Struggling to find a cure Holden was employed to help with the test results since he was the only person who could read the results. It was later discovered that Holden was imune to the green bacteria in the eyes due to his cancer medication he constantly took due to his exposure to radiation on Eross years before. Using this information a cure was found and people slowly began to regain their sight.
The Investigator reappeared to Holden this time appearing to be more the personality of Miller himself than the Protomelcule itself. He told Holden there was a single location deep beneath them that he could not see and that it was what destroyed the Ring Builder technology. They traveled into the structure deeper. Amos and Elvi followed. Later Murtry followed in an attempt to stop Holden and claim the planet's resources for the RCE. After a shoot out between him and Holden he is wounded and taken prisoner. The Investigator hooked himself up to every Ring Builder structure and machine on the planet and found a physical machine to put himself into. He required someone to move him into the area he could not see which was a ball of light and darkness later called a Void bullet. This Void bullet was something ancient that had killed the Ring Builders, and anything of theirs that touched it would be instantly destroyed. Elvi grabs the machine the Investigator is in and throws it into the void bullet. This caused all the technology on the planet to go inert and the threat of another explosion being ended.[6]
