Kolvoord is a scientist and member of the International Astronomical Survey Group (IASG).

History[]

Kolvooord was assigned as a science officer aboard the UNN Thomas Prince during the voyage to The Ring.

Throughout the series[]

A very anxious man, he watches the readings from the Ring structure very closely. When asked, Kolvoord postulates to Anna Volovodov that the ring is a technology created by an extremely advanced intelligent civilization relative to the known solar system. He believes humanity should hope the technology is inert.[1]

Later, as events unfold in the Ring space, Kolvoord suggests that Ashford send out an unmanned skiff to detonate a nuclear warhead in the slow zone, so that they can see if that has any effect on the restraining effect holding their ships in place.[2]

After hearing Anna Volovodov's broadcast imploring all ships in the slow zone to shut down their reactors, he persuades Commander Kunis that they have nothing to lose by doing so. UNN Thomas Prince then becomes one of the first ships in the slow zone to go dark, leading others to follow their example.[3]
