Nieuwestad is one of the planets of a planetary system connected to the Ring network.
History[]
Jacobin-Black Combined Capital, a company specializing in industrial construction and microclimate engineering, receiceved a contract to conduct geological survey on Nieuwestad, the main habitable planet in the system.[1] Although colonization efforts began less than ten years ago, half a million people live in Fortuna Sittard, the capital city. The planet has a local dry dock, though it is presumably in orbit, rather than down the well.
Planetary conditions[]
Nieuwestad provides a local gravity of 1.2 g and rotation of the planet provides thirty-two-hour days and sixteen-month years.
Biology[]
The local biosphere relies on compounds that aren’t toxic to humans but can be irritating, so most inhabitants keep inside the sealed areas of the city.
Flora[]
The local tree analogs are complexes of mosslike growths that build up like vast coral reefs, and they shimmer silver to green to ruddy orange depending on the temperature and the direction of the wind.[2]

Kit Kamal, his wife and son travelled from Mars to the system on the Preiss in order to begin survey work with Jacobin-Black Combined Capital.[3] Later, Alex Kamal joined them in the system just before the Ring network was completely shutdown by James Holden.[4]

Trivia[]
- Nieuwestad means "New City" in Dutch. The planet is likely named for a village Nieuwstadt near Sittard, Netherlands, which corresponds with the name of the main city, Fortuna Sittard.
