The MCRN Barkeith vanishing in the anomaly.

When the ship passed through the gate, the image flickered and danced as the recording equipment was bombarded with high-energy particles and magnetic flux. The image stabilized and the ship was no longer visible
Nemesis Games, Chapter 5

The Ring gate anomaly, also known as "going dutchman"[1], is a bizarre phenomenon in which ships passing through the Ring network would fail to reappear on the other side. These ships would not appear in any other system and, for all intents and purposes, vanish without a trace.

Description[]

The anomaly is instigated when a large amount of mass passes through a ring gate in a short period of time, causing ships to vanish in transit. The ships that went missing did so during times of high traffic when Medina Station’s attention was stretched between five or six different ships. Afterward, the Ring that the missing ship had passed showed not a spike of radiation but a discontinuity – a moment when background levels changed suddenly.[2]

Not all ships would vanish during an anomaly event, such as the Jaquenetta, which successfully transited a Ring Gate; while the Oleander-Swift, which preceded it, and the Harmony, which followed it, both vanished.[3]

It is eventually revealed that the anomaly is caused by seemingly intelligent entities which reside in the universe that lies beyond the boundaries of the Ring Space. These beings are apparently harmed or otherwise inconvenienced by the presence of the Ring Space, which leaches energy from their universe in order to sustain itself; this effect is exacerbated whenever a ship passes through a Ring Gate. As a result, whenever too many ships pass through a ring gate in short succession and cause an energy spike, these beings respond by destroying the ship(s), either to mitigate the effect of their transit or as an act of retaliation.

History[]

During humanity's colonization of the new systems accessed through the slow zone, it was noticed that thirteen ships of the total of four hundred and thirty-seven had vanished while heading through the Ring gates[4]. Naomi Nagata was able to develop an equation to identify when the wake of transiting ships through a Ring network gate would cause the Rings to react in a way that would make a ship vanish as it transited.[5]. She was able to use the equation to turn the phenomenon into a weapon against the Free Navy, when she and James Holden used it to destroy the Free Navy fleet lead by Marco Inaros as they passed through the Sol gate into the Slow Zone.[6]

Upon entering the Laconia gate, the Barkeith vanished.[7]

Made aware of the disappearance of the Barkeith, James Holden received data of multiple other ship disapperances provided by UN signals intelligence through Roberta "Bobbie" Draper.[8] He then relayed that information to Naomi Nagata who uncovered a discernable pattern on these events happening in short and clustered time intervalls while reviewing the data.[9]

Nagata, with the help of Elvi Okoye, was able to identify when the wake of transiting ships through a Ring network gate would cause the Rings to react in a way that would make a ship vanish as it transited. They were able to turn the phenomenon into a weapon against the Free Navy when she and James Holden used it to destroy the Free Navy fleet led by Marco Inaros as they passed through the Sol gate into the Slow Zone by detonating the damaged Giambattista and multiple nuclear torpedo warheads inside the gate.[10]
