Blurb[]
Like many before them, Cara and her family ventured through the gates as scientists and researchers, driven to carve out a new life and uncover the endless possibilities of the unexplored alien worlds now within reach.
But soon, the soldiers followed and, under this new order, Cara makes a discovery that will change everything.
Plot[]
Cara Bisset, a child who has lived on Laconia for eight years, is exploring the forest near her house at a pond she likes. While hanging out near the pond, a pack of alien dogs approach her and leave when she asks them to. Later that day, she feeds a local sunbird mother food from her pocket, because she saw a lady in a certain book do the same in Paris, on Earth. After eating the food from Cara's pocket, the sunbird dies.
Upset that she killed the sunbird, Cara brings a drone to help retrieve the baby sunbirds and return them to the nest. However, she breaks her mother's drone in the process. During this visit, the pack of dogs returns and steal the dead mother bird.
Upon Cara's next visit to the pond, she sees the mother bird alive with a wax coating around it and eyes of black. Feeling better, Cara asks the dogs if they can repair the drone she broke. The next time she shows up to the pond, the drone has also been repaired.
When Cara returns, she learns that her brother, Xan, has been killed by one of the soldiers in a drunk driving accident. In the wake of the incident, she is visited by Duarte, who assures her that the soldier has been punished and will be executed for his crimes. In the night before Xan's burial, Cara takes her brother's body out to the pack of dogs. After waiting the night and a little searching, Cara finds her brother alive, but changed in the same way sunbird was, his movements taking a second to process and his eyes being black.
When Cara returns with Xan, Cara's father separates Xan and Cara, slashes the former with a knife, and throws him out on the back porch and blocks the door with a chair. Cara's mother calls the military police. In the meantime, Cara fakes an escape, then returns to her brother, releases him, and they escape into the forest, resting assured that the dogs would resurrect her in the eventuality of death.
