Plot[]

Two years after the Bombardment of Earth and Alex Kamal's death, The Rocinante and its crew are out beyond Uranus, contacted by the Transport Union for security for ships in transit to the Sol ring. As the Roci responds to a distress signal from the Grunya Sukhareva, a colony transport headed to Medina station carrying soil supplies, the Roci crew realize they are too late as the ship had been destroyed by pirates. Captain James Holden is frustrated and angered by this discovery as he converses with pilot Bobbie Draper about the Sol System starving. He wonders why they would destroy it and Bobbie indicates that the pirate boss, Sohiro, didn't want to leave witnesses and Holden vows to hunt him down. Bobbie reminds him that they are running low on supplies and should resupply before beginning the hunt.

On Earth, Secretary General Chrisjen Avasarala is hosting a press conference at the Pennsylvania impact site crater in the North American Trade zone with a Martian ambassador. Avasarala talks of the struggle to feed the people of Earth, Mars, the Belt and the worlds beyond the Sol Ring. She emphasis even after the Free Navy conflict, humanity must be united in these difficult times. Journalist Monica Stuart asked Avasarala and the Martian Ambassador about how the food supply issue got to this point and about how Marco Inaros wouldn't have been able to do what he did without Duarte's breakaway faction support. The Martian ambassador responded by saying the defectors are not martian and will face death for their sedition. Avasarala agrees with him and the ambassador agrees to a transparent commission to investigate how their governments could prevent future policy failures.

Onboard U.N. One in Earth's orbit, Avasarala apologies to Monica for some of the harsher words she used to answer her questions and said it was important to make it seem that Monica's questions were not prepared. Avasarala questions if Monica can handle having behind the scenes access but Monica assures her she just wants to seek her real agenda. The Secretary General then reveals she worries about Admiral Duarte and how defection is an easy thing to plan and wonders if some of his defectors still hide in the Sol system, especially with the her joint chiefs proposing the Earth-Mars Coalition. Monica asks her if its not over and Avasarala says she can't see Duarte's endgame which keeps her up at night.

Back onboard the Rocinante, Naomi Nagata sent out a drone to search the wreckage of the Grunya Sukhareva but the drone finds no survivors and that the ship had been vented to space before bing destroyed. Holden is certain this fits Sohiro's tactics. Naomi did some research on Sohiro but found little information on him. What she did find showed him as being a gangster from Ceres who died and was the brother of Jorge Sohiro and Victor Sohiro who were killed with Klaes Ashford on the Tynan. Her research also finds he worked for CPM security on Eros and they wonder if he was able to get off asteroid without dying, but Holden wonders if it is someone else using Sohiro's name.

On a lower deck of the Roci, Bobbie finds Amos Burton and he tells her he found the McGlenton Scotch. They go meet up with Holden and Naomi as its the anniversary of Alex's death. They have a toast in Alex's memory. Holden also informs the crew of the need to burn to a station to resupply and that the Gatamang Fronte would cover for them. Amos then heads to Clarrisa Mao's room, who did not join them earlier. She asks how the toast went and Amos assures it was good and that she should be there next time even if she feels it is not appropriate. Amos tells her he knows the burden of guilt and that everyone has a past. Clarissa and Amos then talk about poetry, her parents, and the personal phrase she uses to convince herself she is not afraid and not a monster. She tells him she's afraid all the time and Amos misunderstands, thinking its about him and leaves. Clarissa tries to assure him its not about him as he goes and once he leaves she meditates to calm down.

In the Ring Space onboard Medina Station, Camina Drummer, the President of the Transport Union welcomes Nico Sanjrani the governor of Ceres. As they talk, Drummer tells Sanjrani that she never signed up to be a farmer as she takes Nico to the drum level. There Drummer shows her the fields that have been planted to grow food but is frustrated by the pirates who have disrupted the needed shipments of soil and food needed to feed all the new colonies beyond the Ring space. Nico tells her they can't help her with getting soil from Earth but instead could help her getting ice nitrates from Arrokoth, a station in the Kuiper belt, which would be cheaper to get. Drummer then is alerted by something from her hand terminal and contacts Carlos 'Bull' De Baca that they have a situation.

Bull, now the head of security on Medina station, floated towards an abandoned unregistered skiff that they were alerted about by the station's traffic control. He radios Drummer speculating it being an abandoned Free Navy ship, planted to blow up the station. Drummer tells him to send a drone but Bull tells her he's going in person with security guards to check it out. When he and his team breaks in, he finds the skiff empty inside with its data core wiped. He then discovers a tool box with Naomi's name on it. Confirming it being the Skiff Filip Inaros used to leave his father.
