"Win or Lose" is the third episode of One Ship, a set of bonus content shorts about the main characters of Season 6 of The Expanse. It was released to streaming on December 24, 2021.
Synopsis[]
As Amos and Bobbie clean up a mess in the Rocinante's cargo bay, their playful banter escalates into a competition of who can be the first to wrestle the other to the floor.
Recap[]
Amos, in voiceover, says The Doctrine of One Ship encompasses both tension and resolution. Bobbie, also in voiceover, says it's no favor to either; conflict and acceptance, unified into something greater.
Amos and Bobbie work together to secure heavy crates in the Roci's cargo bay, which is in disarray after their battle with the Pella. Bobbie, out of breath and sweating from the effort, only says "fuck", which Amos agrees pretty much sums it up. Bobbie asks if they've ever thought about getting the Roci crewed up properly, as it was built for a dozen crew members and she thinks they could use some help around the ship after being alone so long. Amos lightheartedly asks if she is calling them amateurs, to which Bobbie playfully replies that he should not get his knickers in a bunch.
Amos laughs, wondering why every Martian he's ever met thinks they are the "hardest motherfucker in the whole goddamn Solar System", to which Bobbie replies that they have all been training for war ever since Amos was shitting his diapers. Amos jokes she is bragging about being good at pretend-war, but Bobbie shows him the scars she has from her training and sarcastically says she is sure queuing up for free food while enjoying the Earth's free air must have been just as hard. Amos comments she clearly has never been to Baltimore, which Bobbie doesn't recognize. Amos says that, for guys who practice war so much, Martians seem to keep losing all the real wars. Bobbie jokes about when Earth still had a blue sky as a jab at the planet being brought to ruin by Marco Inaros, to which Amos retorts by bringing up the destruction of Deimos, a wound on the pride of all Martians.
The confrontation begins to get serious, as Bobbie humorlessly asks him if he remembers when a bunch of Martians saved him and his crew on the Donnager, which Amos thinks is rather similar to Clarissa saving Bobbie's life on the Azure Dragon without even being trained. Bobbie drops the cargo she is holding and says she hopes Amos has trained Clarissa well, because there's about to be one less mechanic on board. As she approaches him menacingly, Amos rises to his feet and asks if he should wait for her to get her fancy suit on, but she says she only uses it for actual threats. Amos ponders that Holden will be upset if Amos hurts her, to which Bobbie chuckles with sarcastic worry and says she was about to say the same thing about Amos. She proposes that no one needs to get hurt, so "in the interest of crew morale" they can play a simple game: first person to hit the deck loses, and the loser has to clean up the rest of the cargo bay alone.
Amos gives Bobbie one last chance to back off, but she is unconcerned and affirms they are just blowing off some steam for fun. Amos agrees and asks to go over the rules first. Bobbie starts listing the rules, but before she can even finish the first one, Amos lunges at her. She easily deflects his attack, slamming him against one of the crates and then pulling him into a chokehold, strangling him and taunting him for a prolonged amount of time. He is about to fall unconscious when he manages to use his hand terminal to activate the Roci's alarm, distracting Bobbie for a split second, which is enough for him to grab her and toss her to the floor.
As both of them lay on the deck, trying to regain their breath, Amos asserts his victory and says he hopes Bobbie learned her lesson, while Bobbie laughs and calls him a sneaky little bastard. He gets up and offers a helping hand to her, only to pull it away just as she is reaching for it. Smiling with satisfaction, he tells her to have fun cleaning, causing her to chuckle and warn him not to push his luck as he climbs out of the cargo deck.

Notes[]
- Amos's initial tactic — asking to establish rules for a fight, then attacking while his opponent is distracted by defining said rules — may be a reference to the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, in which Paul Newman's character Butch Cassidy does the same thing when his leadership is challenged by a member of his gang of bandits.
